Hungarians mark 1956 uprising

Hungarians up and down the country today marked Hungary’s 1956 uprising against Soviet rule. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, only two state events will be held this year to commemorate the milestone.

The national flag was hoisted with military honors in a ceremony in front of Parliament at 9 am this morning. The other event will be the presentation of Hungarian state awards.

Otherwise, on Oct. 22 a laser show will be projected on to the Foreign Ministry building. Between Oct. 22 and Nov. 4, photos marking the most important sites of the freedom fight will be shown around Budapest.
